About Hiemstra Gardens
Welcome to Hiemstra Gardens! I launched the site in November of 2013 in an effort to share and connect with other gardeners around the world! Not only will you find some great posts on the blog but I also started a project known as Garden Connect with gardeners all over the world growing identical 6 by 2 foot plots in their yard! We would love to have you join us so be sure to read more about Garden Connect.
Hiemstra Gardens satisfies the need for a creative, reliable and spontaneous resource for today's gardeners and nature lovers.
About Matt Hiemstra
I'm a young gardener of 19 years from Russell, ON, Canada. I love gardening, plants, nature, writing, photography, art and all things rustic, vintage and unique.
Currently I'm study horticulture at Niagara College in the heart of Canada's horticultural heaven! I've met some great people and learned so much though I'm sure to learn more as gardening, like many things, can be approached in many different ways and there is no such thing as the "right" way!
In fact, my own studies and experiences have allowed me to extend my reach beyond traditional gardening practices in favor of a new approach that emphasizes sustainability, affordability and creativity.
I can't remember what year I began gardening but it hasn't been all too long. Maybe only six years if I had to guess. My father brought home three tomato plants after about 15 or so years of abandoning the garden in the back corner of our yard. We planted them in the only bed that was partially weed free, right up against the house by the back southwest corner! He told me to come out and water them every day whenever I got home from school and I did my best missing only a day or two here and there.
Eventually the plants grew to cover the cages we'd planted them in and not long after the tomatoes started to turn red, ready for harvesting. By then I still didn't think of myself as a gardener but the next year, when tomato plants were brought home once again (this time with a seed packet of peas and some Kale seedlings), I was hooked and I knew it! I started my battle in the old vegetable patch, a battle I still lose some years giving up hope as every single plant is lost to the weeds. It was fun though and it was mine, my piece of the property to do with as I like and since then I've expanded the garden yearly, often doubling the size!
Would I change anything? No! I may have made mistakes, killed a few things and done some things four times over but everything has gotten me to where I am, and hopefully someday it will take me to a career in horticulture...and preferably one where I'll be writing to you as often as possible!
