You stop at a nearby bench and examine your shoe closer, lifting the shoe off the ground and leaning towards it. Once again the smell hits you. You realize it's not actually what the smell suggests. It's the tree!! The sidewalk is littered with fallen fruit......and it smells like dog poop!!
But you don't remember your neighbors tree ever having fruit, the only reason your shoe ever smelled like this in their yard was due to to their young lab. So why then are these trees different. Are they perhaps a different tree??
The answer is no.........It's a Maidenhair tree (ginkgo biloba), an interesting and stunning tree which has separate female and male trees. The males won't produce the undesirable poo smelling fruit while the females will. So how do you know which one you're picking up from the garden center. Well luckily, garden centers usually only carry the males and it's very rare that female plants are planted next to roadsides or sidewalks....although, some people have made that mistake..........
